With Parkinson’s comes freezing of the facial muscles to the point where it becomes difficult to smile. In fact, those facial signals you usually get when looking at your husband are missing, and that impacts communication. Extra effort is required at times. Recently, I asked Alva to actually focus on smiling so that I could take a photo of him and let him see that he can still smile when he makes the effort. And so he did.
Several days later, his “almost” granddaughter Amanda came with her family for a visit. You will notice that when she gave him a hug, it became much easier for him to smile!
Sometimes it just takes a little help from your friends.
